Tips and Tricks If You’re Stuck In The Snow
- Be Prepared for Winter – If you drive a lot in winter in an area that gets regular snow, then be prepared for it. You should consider carrying a snow shovel or snow chains, a winch or tow strap, and a jack. The more prepared you are, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to get yourself out of a tricky situation.
- Stop and Evaluate – The first thing to do if you’re stuck in the snow is to stop and evaluate the situation. If it’s safe to do so, get out of the vehicle and assess the situation. If you’re on the highway or in a dangerous situation, remain in your vehicle and call for assistance.
- Clear a Path – If it’s safe to do, start by clearing a path for your vehicle. Remove any excess snow from around your tires and in the general direction you plan on heading. You want to make the path as straight and short as possible to make it easier to get back on the road.
- Improve the Traction – If you have carpet, sand, kitty litter, or scraps of cardboard, place them in front of your wheels to increase the traction. If there are branches around these could also be used if they’re not too big.
- Select a Low Gear – Take your vehicle out of traction control and select a low gear or use 4WD if you have it. Low and slow is the key. You want to avoid any rapid acceleration. Instead, wind down your window and listen to your vehicle, and you accelerate. Keep your wheels as straight as possible.
- If All Else Fails – Phone someone! Calling for help is always a great idea, and while it may cost you a few dollars, it could also save your vehicle.
